SSRI Augmentation | Ask the Therapist: I was on 150mg sertraline for many years and doing well. My psychiatrist agreed that I could come off. Unfortunately, my depression and anxiety returned as several major life stressors emerged. The dose was increased to 200mg and 1mg of aripiprazole was added. My doc said it would 'jump start' the sertraline and might not be needed long term. In your experience, can an augmenting drug 'jump start' an SSRI and then be discontinued? (From the USA) A: I think it is important to follow your physician's lead on this while keeping in mind the potential pros and cons. Study Shows Some Video Games Can Impact Brain’s Learning & Memory System: In a new study of video games, researchers found that the hippocampal system of the brain is influenced by the navigation strategy that a person employs as well as the genre of the game. The hippocampus is the brain region associated with spatial learning, navigation, and memory and is critical to healthy cognition. The more depleted the hippocampus becomes, the more a person is at risk of developing brain illnesses and diseases ranging from depression to schizophrenia, PTSD and Alzheimer's disease. Players who do not use spatial memory strategies such as landmarks to navigate through a first-person shooting game, but spontaneously rely on response strategies such as counting and patterning to find their way around the game are even more affected. These are the findings of researchers from the University of Montreal and McGill University in Canada, who conducted several studies published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. Novo relatório mostra que, embora o percentual de doadores voluntários de sangue tenha crescido de 38,5% para 44,1% entre 2013 e 2015 na América Latina e no Caribe, ainda está longe de atingir o nível de 100% recomendado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) para garantir um suprimento de sangue suficiente e seguro para as transfusões.
“Precisamos mudar a cultura de uma única doação motivada pela urgência para uma cultura baseada em doações repetidas e altruístas”, disse a assessora regional de Serviços de Sangue e Transplantes da OPAS/OMS, María Dolores Pérez-Rosales. “Só assim os bancos de sangue dos países da região poderão alcançar a autossuficiência e garantir que o acesso ao sangue para transfusões seja universal”.

In the United States, between 20 and 31 million people are living on land that would be submerged by rising oceans without aggressive cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, according to a study published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
That scenario could occur if global average temperatures rise by 3.3 degrees Celsius (5.9 degrees Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels by the end of the century, said the study's lead author, Benjamin Strauss.
